+Linux

From: Mikael Hghede
Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 13:59:31 GMT
I am trying to improve the quality of my XFree86 display in Linux (using an old 15 inch display). One way would be to get anti-aliasing/font smoothing to work at least for the applications I am using mainly, that is (X)Emacs / Netscape.

As X11 does not support font smoothing, the applications must be written for this. Supportedly, this should give a 4 times increased visibility.

So I wonder if anybody has a hint how this could be done, for example, do there exist any clones to these applications that support font rendering. Using for example the FreeType library it should be possible to write such an application.

Mikael

non-scaleable fonts

From: Scott Hapgood
Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 20:04:33 GMT
Hi: I'm trying to clarify a point for a work proposal that specifically requires that we use "NO SCALEABLE FONTS". Although the purpose of the particular requirement isn't clear to me, my understanding is that the commonly installed fonts in this group (on Win 95/98) are: Courier, Fixedsys, MS Sans Serif/ MS Serif, symbol, system, terminal, small fonts, and MS-DOS cp437. Can any verify whether I'm right on this for me? Thanx in advance.

fontview.exe not always working

Do you know why when, in Windows 95, double-clicking on the .fon fonts, the fontview.exe program works fine, but while double-clicking on the .ttf fonts, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't? The fonts that do NOT work also do not show up in applications. The computer has been restarted after installation. What could be wrong?

TrueType Optima???

I'm trying to obtain a font which will work with MS-Word. I need "Optima" specifically. I'm also pretty clueless about fonts and would appreciate any info that you could convey. Basically someone set a standard to use a font which the other half of the users don't have available. I need to connect the two with as little trouble as possible.

TIA,

Optima (in PC TrueType format) is available from Linotype Library; you generally need a license to a font for each machine that is used to compose text in that font. -- Laurence

Specific Font Manager Needed

From: Deanna Sterling
Date: Sun, 7 Feb 1999 05:48:54 GMT
I am looking for a font manager and/or program that allows me to rename TT fonts and categorize them in such a way so that when I click on fonts in Word 97, Publisher 98 or any other Windows programs, I don't see Arial, Times Roman, etc. (and the other 950 fonts I have in alphabetical order), I see the categories I created, like Script Fonts, Handwriting Fonts, Dingbats, Text Fonts, etc. When I click on Dingbats, for instance, then I want to see the names of the fonts, like Common Bullets, Dixieland, Webdings, etc. or whatever else I renamed them as. I've looked all over the internet and haven't found what I've described. Can anyone help?

Licensing

From: Quentin Eastman
Date: Tue, 9 Feb 1999 17:09:53 GMT
We want to use Univcd.ttf and Univcdb.ttf in a release of our software product "Profit Tools." This means distributing the files to our customers on the same media with which we distribute our applications. Who owns these particular fonts? Who do I contact with regard to licensing them?

By their DOS filenames, they sound like versions of Univers. This is a Linotype font, so you should ask the folks at Linotype Library for licensing information. - Laurence

Changing characters in a true type font

From: Brenda Ivett
Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 23:28:52 GMT
I made my own font (true type font), and it has just one character mapped, it is a logo, so, when I keypress a "C" and I choose my font a logo is displayed, I tested in WINNT with a HP-LaserJet printer and I didn't have problems, but someone needs to use my font with WINNT but with HP-DeskJet 500 or HP-DeskJet 600, and this person is having problems because when she uses the font, sometimes it is displayed and sometimes a "little hand" symbol is displayed.

Do you know what could it be???

Thanks in advance,

Brenda Ivett

This is a good Question....

From: Alexandre Holzhacker
Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 17:55:59 GMT
I need to develop a program that creats True Type Fonts. I'm finishing this program. I have all the information about the caracters that I need, like leadings, curves, and all that stuff.

The only thing that I don't know is how to save an archive as True Type. I mean that I don't know the strukture about a True Type archive and I don't know how to use many of Windows APIs and GDIs to manipule fonts.

That is the Big question... If someone knows that answers, I will be very very glad!

Thanks,

Windows NT GDI and Unicode True Type

From: Matt Page
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 13:14:28 GMT
Does anyone have any experience in hooking into the Windows GDI layer to provide the path to substitute glyphs across all screen and printer drivers?

I can find nothing documented (naturally), but have been peeking at the system to notice that INT 0x2E is used with eax at 0x1074 for the GetCharacterPlacement function.

I would rather perform this hook at run time, rather than in a device driver (if possible).

(Sorry if this question is not appropriate to this forum).

HELVITICA NARROW

From: ROBERT
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 13:22:57 GMT
Some True Type fonts from (Win95) QuarkXpress 3.32r2 and other applications run OK through our QMS 2060 Imageserver, but on our Purup PS Link UNIX RIP the PS file will error, or print with unusual characters in the place of what we would expect normal characters. On other occassions we have converted the PS file to a PDF, and back to PS file, this still prints OK on the QMS but some words have lost several characters ie SERVIC, the letter E is missing. Replacing the font for a TYPE 1 substitute solves the problem.

Truetype handling

From: Pedro Lozano
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 22:29:46 GMT
I am making a program which will (hopefully) make use of truetype fonts. The problem is that I need to show the font, any size, in a fullscreen graphical mode (like if it was a game or demo font). Do I need to write my own code to draw it, or is there any library/utility about?

I would also like to know if you need permission to make use of any truetype font (from the designer, or from apple or any other company who has the copyright)

Thank you very much. I would appreciate your help.

TTC -> TTF

From: Sato
Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 22:31:00 GMT
Hello:

I just recently picked up Dynafont's japanese font pack which contains a collection of their japanese ttc font types. All i want to do is just convert them to TTF so I can create the japanese text in photoshop for some web work. I am running the english win98, and using unionway asian suite 97 to encode japanese text.

Are there any utilities out there for PC?

A simple converter will do, not necessary to edit the font images.

Any info would be greatly appreciated -

Re: How to use TrueType fonts in my website

From: Jeroen Mostert
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 08:51:24 GMT
If you have a .ttf file, you can install it on your machine by dragging it to your fonts folder (C:\WINDOWS\FONTS). This will allow you to use it in your website if you're using a font-enabled HTML editor such as Microsoft FrontPage. However, all users viewing the web page will need to have the font installed as well, otherwise your page gets horribly mutilated (or 'the font is substituted', as Microsoft euphemistically calls it).

You could instruct everyone to download the font, ofcourse, but a better solution could be to use the newly-developed dynamic fonts. These fonts are downloaded on-the-fly by the browser if the user has enabled them (visit http://developer.netscape.com/tech/dynhtml/index.html for more information). Unfortunately, this only works in recent versions of Netscape Communicator (as far as I know).

The best solution overall is to stick to fonts that you KNOW to be available (on a clean install of Windows 95, for example). If you're bold, take a peek into Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). This is hot stuff, but perhaps a bit over the top if you merely want to use a pretty font for your page. Anyway, you can visit www.w3c.org/Style/CSS/ if you want to stay up to date.

changing a name in Win 95

From: Julian Long
Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 05:14:47 GMT
I use fonts heavily in my Photoshop designs. I'd like to make

the style or catagory in which the fonts fall (according to my

personal classification) immediately evident by adding characters

like - or+ before the name for example all my "techno" fonts

would be "--tech1", --universal" etc... Is there any way at all

to do this so that the fonts appear with the names I want for them

in all my drop lists? Thanks in advance for your time and help

your site seems really helpful.

Courier

From: Ed Lake
Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 22:39:17 GMT
Courier is the basic font for writing books and screenplays,

yet most (or all) new computers with Windows-98 do not give

you Courier, only Courier New. Courier New is too light because

the lines are drawn too thin, and Courier New BOLD is too thick.

Why doesn't Microsoft WORD or Windows-98 include a TrueType

version of the Courier font? Windows-98 gives you Courier New

in TrueType, but not basic Courier.

Apparently Corel's WordPerfect DOES give you a TrueType version

of Courier. But why not WORD?

Real Courier/Typewriter TrueType font?

From: Glenn Camhi
Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 13:56:56 -0500
Does anybody out there know of a real Courier/Typewriter TrueType font? By "real" I mean NOT the crappy MS "Courier New" which is way too thin.

Something crisp and simple but properly courier and thicker than the Courier New -- but still with a clear bold. I have one from ages ago that's a .fon type, but it isn't working with Word anymore and it produces inconsistent results on different printers.

Thank you very much, anyone who can help! Screenwriters everywhere, among others, will thank you.

Downloading French characters

From: Elizabeth S. Lourie
Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 01:43:35 GMT
Can someone please tell me how to download French fonts to use with Windows 95 on a PC, and also with the Internet? I will need very specific directions on how to do this as I am only an "advanced beginner" in downloading. I have learned how to set the computer to receive French characters but now I need the accented letters. I don't want more than the basic number of fonts. I would guess that would be just capital and lower case letters, but I may be wrong.

Thank you very much.

Hi,

I am writing the program to install the arlrdbd.ttf file on

the font directory. In winnt4.0, I am able to copy the arlrdbd.ttf

file on the winnt\fonts directory. After copied the file, I call the

addfontresource winapi function to add the font to the font table.

And call the sendmessage to send the message to the windows. But

Win95, win98, I am not able to copy the file on the fonts directory.

I know the font installation using the control panel. But I want to write

the font installation program using some installation software.

Do you have any ideas?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

Amutha.

Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 22:49:58 GMT
I have recently been forced into the PC world from the Mac

world and one of the tragedies appears to be the loss of use

of an Apple GX font that I liked. Is there anyway to

convert "Skia" into a truetype or anything that my NT

machine might be able to use? Any suggestions would

brighten a dreary day in Seattle. Thanks!

Hi,

With Japanese symbols set (MBCS), GetGlypghOutlineA is failing on both Win95 & WinNT. On WinNT GetGlyphOutlineW work fine for the same. But Win95 does not have GetGlyphOutlineW implementation. Any information on how to fix the problem of GetGlyphOutlineA on Win95 will be of great help to me.

True Type to Standard Type

From: dan milz
Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1999 16:39:14 GMT
I was wandering if there is a way to make a font that will convert any true type font into a font that is a printer supported font. Or if there is a way to make the true type font read as a printer supported font, meaning I don't care what the font looks like, I just want to be able to run this through a print filter. But the filter only looks at printer supported fonts.

chinese to english translations

From: Lori deRoin
Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 00:29:31 GMT
We are doing business with a company in Tai Pei. They have sent me the english to chinese translation for the signs/words we need to manufacture. This is done in Excel. Unfortunately, when we open the file we can read the english but not the Chinese version. I am assuming this is because we do not have the Chinese font on our computer. How can we get this font and do I need to know which font my Chinese counterpart has used in order to get a true translation?

Point Size

From: Leslie Foraker
Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 20:14:47 GMT
I know this is a real basic question, but I've not found an answer anywhere in the net resources I dug up: Does 'font size' (and I'm talking specifically about Microsoft Word) equate to 'point size.?' By my estimation, 30 point type, for instance, would be a bit shy of 1/2" - 5/12 of an inch, or .415" or thereabouts. When I measure size 30 font, for instance Times New Roman, it's barely more than 1/4" tall.

How to change leading in a TTF?

From: Andr W. Lernhart
Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 23:27:47 GMT
I'm a programmer. I need very often to write apps which prints info onto a form with predefined lines (every other line is shadowed, so teh distance between two lines is given).

Say, I want (or have) to use Courier 10 pts (monospace). The leading (space between two lines) is given by the point size. How to change leading? Making it somewhat bigger or smaller?

Which font editor/creater could be used to change this?

thanks a bunch for every hint!

Fonts with BT suddenly change to bold

From: Sarah

Twice now I've had fonts suddenly displaying and printing differently than they're supposed to in all applications. The fonts are Humanist, one is 531 BT and one is 777 BT. I based templates on these fonts and so people are using them and everything's fine and then suddenly one day the 531 BT (or 531n, which should be normal face, or roman face not bolded) is appearing and printing bold. I've removed fonts and reinstalled, removed most other fonts, removed applications, etc. What in the heck is going on! This is a MAJOR problem right now. Please HELP!!!!! Oh, Win95b, Office 97sr2. GetGlyphOutline

From: Sergey Zholudev
Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 13:44:45 GMT
System - Windows 98 Arabic

Compiler - VC++ 5.0

I am trying to extract the outline from TrueType arabic fonts.

I use the result of GetCharacterPlacement(glyph array). It works

well for ExtTextOut with ETO_GLYPH_INDEX.It isn't working with

GetGlyphOutline with GGO_NATIVE.I have tried GGO_GLYPH_INDEX,but

it isn't working too.It works for separate letter, because I pass

ASCII directly. My question is "How can I get correct uchar for

initial, medial and final form",because for different fonts I

must pass different values(I don't know why).I have found out

it by using GetGlyphOutline into loop(uchar 32 - 600).I got

all shapes, but result is different for different fonts. If

I use glyph array of GetCharacterPlacement,I get garbage on the

screen.Probably I need some special encoding?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Font Degeneration

From: rmg
Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 16:44:30 GMT
I run Word 97 on Windows NT. Several documents that I have created use true type fonts other than Arial and Times Roman. All documentation look perfect on my screen and prints perfectly to our printers. However, whenever anyone else in the company attempts to open or print the file, Word causes nearest possible fonts to be substituted and destroys the "look" of the piece. I've tried embedding the fonts, and all of the PCs company-wide have the same resident fonts installed. Can you give me a solution that will allow my docuents to look and print the same always?

TrueTypes printing funny

From: Marc Joyce
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 17:09:11 GMT
I am using Windows 95 and for some reason, my TrueTypes print out as weird heiroglyphs on our PostScript printers. They are set to print as outlines in the printer properties. I have compared every resource I know of to compare my computer's setups to those of my coworkers' (Theirs print fine). The only thing that we can think of that happened is that something was changed or removed when I installed and removed our Preps imposition upgrade. This problem has the computer wiz's in our company stumped. Any info would be great.

WYSIWYG truetype in application lists?

I know that this is common on Macs and it's such a handy thing. Is there a windows utility that I can add on? Thanks! biggiec@iname.com?

Amasis MT bold font 10 pt

When using Amasis MT, bold, 10 pt in a WORD document to be faxed with Symantec's WINFAX, the height of the type varies. This seems to happen only with 10 pt size, in both W98 and Windows NT4, when bolded, not when italicized. If you send me your fax number, I'll send you a fax illustrating this. Thanks.

question

From: Salman Saeed
Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 16:12:29 GMT
I just want to know that is there any such font editor software in which settings could be made so that text can flow from right to left. What I mean is that is there any provision in any font editor software in which the font is developed in such a way that when it is instaled in windows and then when selected in Microsoft Word, the curser (after selecting that specific font) starts moving from right to left instead of left to right.

Please answer this question.

If such font editor exists please let me know about it and from where it will be available. If you don't know about it please refer me to some one else who knows about it.

Windows Handling of Truetype Families

From: Gregory Himes
Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 22:28:49 GMT
What does Windows (NT/95/98) use to determine font families and locations?

I created several Truetype typefaces of which four fall into their own family. The problem is that

even though they have been created using Fontographer 4.1.2 both the "Plain" and "Bold" versions appear

properly, but the "italic" version doesn't appear at all -- just a slanted version of the plain and bold

that appear in the italic and bolditalic locations (they do appear correctly when their files are double-

clicked). This doesn't happen on my Macintosh.

Wingdings not printing from Word 97 (SR2) on HP5L (PCL driver)

From: shubhra
Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 22:43:13 GMT
All characters of Wingdings do not print, such as normally used bullets (checkboxes) and arrows that are formed when you type "-->" for example, even though they appear on the screen, when ANY other font is used in the same document in Word 97 SR2. If all characters are printed as "Wingdings" then it all prints fine, but if even one character is in, say, Times Roman, only the Times Roman characters print (with bad kerning), and there is only blank paper in place where the Wingdings should be Wingding printing. The problem occurs both from my laptop and my desktop, so it can't be a CPU hardware issue. Other people are able to print my documents without a problem on their printers. And I can mix fonts in WordPad, and print without a problem, so it can't be my printer - HP5L (PCL driver). So, what's the deal? Is there something wacky (a known issue) between Word 97 and the Wingdings TTF font file? Please help!

Thank you,

Shubhra

Greek minuscule fonts' d, o

From: Kevin D. Rosenberg
Date: Sat, 23 Oct 1999 01:07:00 GMT
In many Latin-alphabet fonts, including Times New Roman, the minuscule f and j project over and under other letters or out into the margin. In all fonts I've seen so far, the Greek little delta has been modified for convenience not to do so; formerly looking like an ear drop with the wire extending over the following letter (like the streetlight f), it now looks much like an omicron with a circumflex -- impossible in most Greek, but plausible if an ancient alphabet without omega is being represented. Are there any fonts with the original small delta and miniature omicron?

as I downloaded the fonts to my font directory, every character

of the font got assigned to a key on the keyboard. I find this

assignment uncomfortable for me to use. I want to reassign the

characters in the font to the keys I like on the keyboard.

How can I do that ?.

printing .fon Windows fonts? + sbits in ttf

From: ute
Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 14:11:32 GMT
I need to print our customized raster fonts which exist as .fon format.

Question 1: Is it correct that I can't print those fonts? Trying to select such a font into the printer device context doesn't work. Windows replaces them always with some other TTFont.

Question 2: How do I embedd my rasters into a ttf-file? Is there a program available, for free or for sale, that does such a ttf on the fly? If not, are there better instructions than the "Technical Specification Revision 1.66" for TT 1.0 Font Files form MS available? Somehow just using the EBLD and EBLC tables while throwing out glyf and loca tables doesn't give a working ttf.

Thanks for any answers.

Ute

Problem printing justified text set in TrueType using Adobe PostScript driver

From: Don Keogh
Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 00:16:33 GMT
I mostly use PostScript printers. As the printer driver I employ the Adobe Version 4.3.1 Postscript Printer Driver.

Most of my work uses the "standard" 35 fonts so though the Word8 document is often composed in Arial it's mapped to the installed Helvetica printer font.

So long as this is the case, justified text prints perfectly. But when the font is say the TrueType font Verdana the letters are printed correctly but the right hand margin is ragged and the spacing between words uneven.

Can anyone tell me what is going on?

Transfering TTF's from 1 computer to another via VB?

From: Dave Rowland
Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 23:35:47 GMT
This is an interesting problem. I have been studying the structures of fonts recently. Learning that they have about three identies. Long Name, Short Name, TTF Name.

Now I wan't to transfer a font from a control PC to a Display PC via a network cable:

Problem 1: You need to install the Font on the Display PC, this can be achieved with AddFontResource, but it accepts .TTF files which is great. But...

On the control PC getting the .TTF name is difficult, as you either have to Dir("C:\windows\fonts\*.ttf") or where else can I pick up the name of the TrueType from a Short Name?

It is fairly hard to program

Looking for "AvantGarde Md BT" font

Hello,

I created a PowerPoint presentation long time ago and used the "AvantGarde Md BT" true type font. I have no idea where it came from, but now I don't have it. I can't print the presentation anymore because the font is missing. If somebody has that font and could send it to me, would be great - rather than changing the whole presentation into a new font.

Thanks in advance!

Managing true type fonts

From: Paul Mathias
Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 17:32:36 GMT
I am having a real difficulty managind true type fonts on Win98. It seems that everytime I delete a font, there are many more in the folder that are "hidden" that seem to automatically install when I delete others.

I need a good font managing system for the long run. Adobe Type Manager doesn't seem to work properly (could this be due to Type1 vs TrueType fonts?).

The programs that I am using are: Corel7, Pagemaker6, Photoshop 5, Illustrator 7.

Could you suggest anything? Or at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Where multiple off-curve points occur consecutively,

an on-curve point is interpolated exactly half-way

between them. ...

The question is "Is the on-curve point interpolated using "linear

interpolation" (i.e. midpoint of straight line between points) or

some other form of interpolation."?

Block Outline Fonts with Color Interiors

From: Peter Belch
Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 14:03:10 GMT
I have used many programs as PhotoShop, and Illustrator, and add-in filters for them, etc.

However, I have not seen any advice on how to create the superb graphics

oriented fonts seen in some terrrific publications.

The example I am referring to is a word that appears to be in an OUTLINE font

with the enlarged, bolded edges in one color and the interior of the letter appearing

in an entirely different color or blend of colors.

You often see this effect used in titles of programs on the TV.

How is this effect created? Is it an add-in filter, a special program,

or just a painfully detailed Ilustrator or Photoshop technique?

Are vector fonts or truetype fonts used to create this effect?

Do you know of any Web sites that explain how to do this?

Thank You for any suggestions you may be able to provide that

will help learn how to do this.

XEROX vs Truetype Fonts

From: Dave
Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 20:40:17 GMT
Hi;

I've been tasked to implement an application which downloads XEROX fsl commands and converts them to a PC format. I'm using Lytrod's "Proform Designer" for this (its a great product).

The data streams I'm try to capture have XEROX font names in them, such as P07TDB, P0812B, & UN210E. Is there anyplace I can find an approximation of these fonts as truetype fonts.

I don't want to use pirated fonts, but I would like to find MicroSoft substitutes.

Thanks for the help.

I have been charged with locating a font supposedly known simply as " Standard ". My search so far has been fruitless and i have great doubt that any one font would or could wrest the title "standard" from amongst the competition. Please shed some light.

Convert .fon to .ttf

I have some text files that were produced in the DOS environment, so it uses code page 437. I now want to be able to view these files in Windows. In Word 97, if I set the font to Terminal, then I see the right characters (particularly the extended ASCII). However, Terminal is not a TTF and using the printers at work, I can only use TTF in Word. Is there a way to convert this font to a TTF? Or are there other TTFs that I can use to view this text file (once again, it MUST use code page 437)? Thanks!
